Diofantiske approksimasjoner

Diofantiske approksimasjoner, oppkalt etter Diofantos, er et delområde av tallteori som studerer approksimeringen av reelle tall med rasjonelle tall.

Det første problemet er å vite hvor nøyaktig et gitt tall kan approksimeres med rasjonelle tall. En brøk a/b er en bra approksimsjion av det reella tallet α om den absolutte verdi av deres differanse ikke kan minskes ved å erstatte a/b med en annen brøk med mindre nærhet. Problemet ble løst på 1700-tallet ved hjelp av kjedebrøk.

Diofantisk approksimasjon er nært relatert til transcendensteori. Diofantisk approksimasjion kan også benyttes i studiet av diofantiske ligninger.
