Messier 46 (dikenal juga dengan M46 atau NGC 2437) adalah sebuah gugus terbuka di rasi bintang Puppis. M46 ditemukan oleh Charles Messier tahun 1771, yang digambarkan sebagai "sangat cerah, sangat kaya, sangat besar". M46 berjarak sekitar 5,500 tahun cahaya dengan perkiraan umur lebih tua dari 100 juta tahun.[1]
Nebula planet NGC 2438 terlihat muncul dalam gugus tersebut di dekat sudut utara (berkas samar di bagian tengah atas gambar) tetapi kemungkinan besar NGC 2438 tidak terkait dengan M46 karena kecepatan radialnya tidak sama.[1][2] The case is yet another example of a superposed pair, joining the famed case of NGC 2818.[1][3]
