George Fitzgerald Smoot III (s. 20. helmikuuta 1945) on yhdysvaltalainen astrofyysikko, tähtitieteilijä ja kosmologi, joka on tutkinut kosmista taustasäteilyä. Hän sai Nobelin fysiikanpalkinnon vuonna 2006 yhdessä John C. Matherin kanssa heidän havainnostaan kosmisen taustasäteilyn mustan kappaleen säteilyn kaltaisuudesta ja sen anisotropiasta.
Smootin aloitteesta NASA toteutti COBE-mission, johon kuului ensimmäinen kosmologian tutkimusta varten rakennettu satelliitti.[1] Smoot työskentelee Kalifornian yliopistossa Berkeleyssä.
Smoot syntyi Floridassa. Hän suoritti kaksi kandidaattitutkintoa ja väitteli tohtoriksi MIT:stä vuonna 1970.[2]
George Smoot aloitti kosmologisen tutkimuksensa Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratoryssa. Hän teki vuonna 1975 esityksen NASAlle COBE-satelliitin toteuttamisesta. Tutkimus on jatkunut edelleen.[3][4]
